Karl Edward Dettmering passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026 with his wife of 70 years, Barbara and other family by his side.
Karl started his earthly journey on December 29, 1931 in Dennison, Texas as the son of Fred and Truvia (Blank) Dettmering.
The family moved north to Wisconsin and finally settled in Medford, Wisconsin. He met his future wife, Barbara McCarron, in Medford and followed her down to the Milwaukee area. They were married on June 4, 1955 and settled in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
Karl learned the trade of carpentry and worked in the construction field for most of his life. As his skills developed, he became a self-employed contractor in the Pewaukee area. He was not always the easiest person to work with and many of his former clients will attest to the fact that deadlines were not crucial. When asked about the completion of a project, his response was usually “Tuesday”. But he never said which Tuesday.
Some of his notable projects in the area are the addition to the Yonke & Son funeral home, the exhibition building at the Pewaukee Historical Society, the convent for St. Mary’s Church, Pewaukee and his personal residence at 312 Park Ave, Pewaukee (many residents called it an ark and thought that he had advanced knowledge of the next flood). Karl’s work was his hobby and his hobby was his work.
Karl was a member of the National Guard in his early years. He was active in the Holy Name Society at St. Mary’s Pewaukee. He served on the Village Board and as the Village assessor. He was a daily visitor and consultant at Wooley’s restaurant in Pewaukee.
After his wife convinced him to stop working, they officially retired and enjoyed some travelling to Ireland, Spain, Alaska and several places around the United States. They also spent time at family holidays and reunions with children, grandchildren and extended family.
He led a full life during his 94 years.
He is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Truvia, his siblings, Esther, Robert, John, Roger and Wesley.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (McCarron) and his children Brian (Jeffrey Sizonen), Peggy (Curt) Houk, Kevin (Heidi) and Jennifer (Tony) Weiterman.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Nicole (Ryan) Ksioszk, Riley (Lauren) Houk, Kalvin (Allison) Houk, Tony Weiterman, Jr. and Abby Weiterman. And then there are the great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Jacob Ksioszk, Mackenzie and Benjamin Houk, and Emily and Kamryn Houk.
And he is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Karl made an impression on everyone he met.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28th, 2026 at Yonke and Son Funeral home, 205 Prospect Ave, Pewaukee, WI. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to noon and a service at noon.
A celebration of life will be held at Machine Shed Restaurant, N14 W24145 Tower Place, Pewaukee.
Memorials in Karl’s name may be made to the Pewaukee Historical Society, 206 E Wisconsin Ave, Pewaukee, WI 53072.
